Azzurro Italian Oven + Bar Takes a Fresh, Elegant Approach to Italian Cuisine

A glimpse into what makes this Rehoboth Beach restaurant so special.

BY PAM GEORGE Published: 08.30.2018

Since 2007, several restaurant concepts have occupied the former Chez La Mer location in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Many longtime visitors, however, still refer to the site as "the old Chez La Mer," undoubtedly because the French restaurant occupied the Second Street and Wilmington Avenuelocation for nearly 30 years.

But the latest occupant, Azzurro Italian Oven + Bar, just might have the chops to claim the space anew in regular diners' minds.

For one, owners Tonya and Francesco Agostino have transformed the décor to make it their own. In the past, the 19th-century building felt dark and cramped. But no longer: Light materials—including granite, white-washed siding, textured stone tiles and driftwood-colored tabletops—make a dramatic difference.

These Two New Beach Restaurants Boast Delightful Outdoor Dining

The coast's latest alfresco additions: Azzurro Italian Oven + Bar and The Wheelhouse at Fisherman’s Wharf.

If you want to savor an ocean breeze while eating out this summer, you've officially got more options along the coast. Azzurro Italian Oven + Bar in Rehoboth is a short stroll from the Rehoboth Boardwalk, while The Wheelhouse at Fisherman’s Wharf sits on the canal in Lewes.

These newbies are still finding their footing, but based on our recent visits, they’re going to be popular this summer.

Azzurro is in the former home of Papa Grande’s Coastal Taqueria and Chez La Mer. The rooftop terrace remains, and we climbed the stairs to take a seat at a shady communal table.
